If there is one thing that characterises Washington DC, it is its multiculturalism and broad social diversity of beliefs and currents. One of the movements that has influenced this metropolis is the Harlem Renaissance.

Emerging in the 1920s and 1930s in Harlem, this movement and explosion of African-American social consciousness spread across the country. It was characterised by giving visibility to and highlighting the creativity and talent of the African-American community in disciplines such as music, dance, literature, politics and art.

Famous figures such as singer Lilian Evanti, whose residence will be one of the sites you will see on this tour, emerged. She was the first African-American woman to perform as an opera singer for a major European company. Also Jean Toomer, a poet and novelist who was one of the pioneers of African-American literature.
