57 Fun Things to Do in Charlestone

If you are travelling to Charleston, South Carolina, take a look at all these plans I suggest in the Holy City. From visits to its main plantations to gastronomic tours, ghost tours and water sports days. Whatever your interests, you're sure to find plenty of plans on this list that will catch your attention.

In addition, I also recommend you check out this article on what to see and do in Charleston, so you can understand what's most important for your visit and organise your travel itinerary.

1. Walk around Charleston's main sights and attractions

Made up of beautiful stately homes, cobblestone streets and picturesque landscapes, the heart of old Charleston feels like a living museum on a grand scale. For that reason, one of the best ways to learn about its history, evolution and customs is through a historical tour of Charleston.

As you'll soon realise, you'll find a number of choices in the city, making it easy to find the ideal excursion for every style of traveller. Options range from extensive tours of the old town to highly specialised tours that include visits to art galleries, old cemeteries or tastings of local cuisine.

On average, tours last two hours and the price varies greatly depending on the specific qualities of the experience. Most companies run tours several times a day at specific times, so it's easy to find a place even on tight itineraries. Finally, on the day of your tour, be sure to bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen and plenty of water!

I also recommend you check out our post about the Charleston sightseeing bus, another convenient way to tour the city.

In Charleston's cozy little French Quarter is the Old Slave Mart Museum, a historic old building where slaves were auctioned off in pre-Civil War times.

A visit to this museum includes a self-guided tour to learn the poignant and shocking story of the thousands of unfortunates (mostly anonymous) who passed through this dreadful place.

3. Come to America's oldest museum

Yes, Charleston is home to America's oldest museum. This is the Charleston Museum. If you are a museum lover you can't miss the Charleston Museum, known as the first museum in the United States. Located in the Wraggborough area, this fabulous exhibition space was founded in 1773 under the aegis of the Charleston Library Society.

On a visit to this space you will find interesting and impressive facts about the founding of the city, including exhibits on how the Native Americans and early settlers related to each other. Already a historical fact in itself, the museum traces the history of the city, with exhibits on the Revolutionary War or the history of the Lowcountry.

In addition, the Charleston Museum connects to two historic homes: the Joseph Manigault House and the Heyward-Washington House. Thus, it offers a complete historical and cultural experience.

4. Tour the famous Magnolia Plantation by bus

Magnolia Plantation| ©Warren LeMay

Charleston's history is strongly linked to the plantations it is home to. You can't understand one concept without the other, as they go hand in hand. While the idea of just wandering around the city of Charleston may be tempting, I recommend that my travel friends explore beyond the city limits, travel itinerary and budget permitting.

Charleston's plantations are stately homes of impressive luxury, once home to wealthy Southern merchants. They are located just outside Charleston's historic and commercial centre, but there are numerous local companies in the city that offer tourists the opportunity to tour the plantations with a local guide who is an expert in the city's history.

If you want to travel back in time and learn about the city's past, I recommend a visit to the Mongolia Plantation, considered the most beautiful garden in the United States. It is one of the oldest plantations in the South, having its origins in 1676.

After centuries marred by great historical events, Magnolia Plantation is still standing. You can tour the grounds in an air-conditioned bus, taking you out of the heat. In addition, a local guide will tell you all about the site.

5. Get lost at Drayton Hall Plantation

I consider a plantation tour from Charleston to be a once in a lifetime experience and vital to understanding the evolution and history of its people. It is well known that the prosperity of the merchants who settled in Charleston would not have been possible without the trade and commerce of thousands of slaves, who were auctioned, sold and bought to work on these plantations.

Slave labor was part of the common dynamic in the homes of these wealthy merchants. These unfortunate souls worked the crops, acted as domestic servants and even as masons and builders, helping to erect the lavish mansions and gardens that you can walk through today.

Charleston is home to the oldest preserved plantation in the United States. Dating back to 1738, Drayton Hall Plantation is preserved today as it was in its day. Now you can experience the plantation for yourself and feel like you've travelled back in time.

Admission includes a visit to Lenhardt Garden, two galleries and an 18th century African-American burial ground. The tour lasts 45 minutes and is supported by an audio guide who will help you understand the importance of the place, its past and all the curiosities surrounding it.

6. See Fort Sumter National Monument

Fort Sumter is one of the main tourist attractions in Charleston, given its historical value. It was here that the American Civil War began. It is therefore a must-see on your trip to the Holy City.

Today, you can still find the fortress that protected it, as well as the shrapnel and cannons that are still preserved on the site. The site also offers wonderful views of the sea.

7. Visit St. John the Baptist Cathedral

St. John the Baptist Cathedral| ©Annie Wilcox

Charleston is full of remarkable religious temples, but if you only have the opportunity to visit one of them I would recommend a visit to St. John the Baptist located in the historic downtown area on the edge of Harleston Village.

The English translation of the name is Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. It is an ancient neo-Gothic style stone church built in 1861 on the remains of another cathedral that was devastated by a raging fire that affected much of the city.

The cathedral is also the largest religious temple in the city. On your visit I recommend you pay particular attention to the decorative architectural elements, which range from the fabulous stone structure and imposing stained glass windows to the carved oak pews and altars made of delicate white marble.

8. About Boone Hall Plantation

Charleston's economic, social and political history has much to do with its plantations. Among the most famous is Boone Hall Plantation, which is considered the city's No. 1 plantation. In fact, Boone Hall is the most photographed plantation in the United States and a visit is a must for anyone travelling to Charleston.

This experience includes entry to the plantation grounds. The tour begins on Avenue Of Oaks and continues with the Black History In America exhibit, which is made up of 9 original slave cabins. As if that wasn't enough, you can also tour the plantation house.

In South Carolina, and specifically in Charleston, black citizens have a past that has, for the most part, been buried. With this walking tour you can discover the part of history you were never told, the part that doesn't appear in the history books. The tour lasts two hours and is guided by Damon Fordham: historian, writer and educator.

The tour takes in sites such as the city market, the Jehu Jones Hotel, the Heyward-Washington House and the Old Slave Mart Museum, where slave auction galleries used to be held.

10. See Middleton Place with a guide and enjoy a Low Country lunch

Middleton Place| ©dogman5

This is one of the most comprehensive and highly recommended experiences I can offer you. Middleton Palace was the residence of two of America's Founding Fathers, making it a must-see for those who want to learn about the history and culture of the country. Beyond that, it's worth a visit for its beautiful gardens, which are, in fact, the oldest in the United States.

The experience includes bus transportation to and from Charleston, as well as a guided tour of the House Museum. You will also be able to take a self-guided tour of the different parts that make up Middleton Place. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious lunch of crab soup, fried chicken, pulled pork, salad and dessert.

11. Cycle over the Ravenel Bridge and take photos!

Ravenel Bridge| ©Doug Kerr
Ravenel Bridge| ©Doug Kerr

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is a modern engineering and architectural feat built over the Cooper River to link historic downtown Old Charleson with Mount Pleasant. Since its completion in 2005, the bridge has become a benchmark in its niche due to its elegant and aesthetic design.

As described by its creators, the imposing structure is designed to withstand winds in excess of 300 miles per hour, earthquakes of 7.4 on the Richter Scale and even ship collisions. As well as being an impressive engineering feat, the bridge is also an aesthetic highlight: at night the lights on the tension cables are beautifully illuminated, creating an incredible visual spectacle.

The bridge is made up of numerous traffic lanes, but also includes a shared pedestrian and bicycle path called the Wonders' Way. You can walk along this marvellous work of art and bring your camera to take panoramic pictures of Charleston from a vantage point.

Some great bike rental options in Charleston include: The Bicycle Shoppe, Bilda Bike, and Charleston Bike Share.

12. Discover The Battery and Charleston's best parks

The Battery| ©Fiddling Bob
The Battery| ©Fiddling Bob

The Battery is the name given to the popular boardwalk located in the South of Broad area of Charleston, an area characterised by majestic historic homes erected before the Civil War.

No visit to Charleston would be complete without a leisurely stroll around the gazebo, but I recommend my fellow travellers complete the route by making strategic stops at the stunning gardens you'll find in close proximity to The Battery.

The White Point Garden

The White Point Garden is surrounded by a picturesque neighbourhood of beautiful mansions. Here you will find majestic oak trees and beautifully manicured palm trees. Without a doubt, one of the most pleasant and peaceful walks to take in Charleston.

The tree-lined paths are interspersed with numerous allegorical Civil War memorials.

Joe Riley Waterfront Park

Possibly Charleston's most famous park, home to the famous and much-photographed pineapple fountain. During the months of July or August in Charleston it is not uncommon to find children playing in the park looking to cool off from the heat.

In addition to the iconic fountain, Waterfront Park offers visitors beautiful views of the Cooper River and the waterfront, making it a perfect walk to enjoy with friends and family.

The Rainbow Row

While Rainbow Row may not be a landscaped park, it's certainly a Charleston landmark you won't want to miss located just across from The Battery.

Here you'll find a row of Southern-style mansions painted in beautiful, eye-catching pastel colours. The houses on Rainbow Row overlook the harbour offering visitors a pretty picture postcard view.

13. See Charles Towne Landing

Charles Towne Landing| ©dogman5
Charles Towne Landing| ©dogman5

Over 30 hectares make up Charleston's largest park. Charles Towne Landing is a beautiful place to relax in the shade of oak trees and lose yourself in nature. The park also has a very important historical value for the city, as it was the place where the British colonists landed in 1670.

Walking around the park will take you back to the colonial era, as the place recreates the way of life of that time. An essential stop on your trip to the Holy City.

14. Travel back in time through the corridors of the Aiken Rhett House Museum

It's easy to find places in Charleston that speak of the city's famous Civil War years. However, it's not so common to come across sites that look beyond this period to the years of slavery. The Aiken Rhett House Museum is one of these places where you can understand the reality of enslaved Africans.

That's why I suggest a guided tour of the interior of this property, where you can see the places where the slaves lived. Since the house is located in downtown Charleston, you can easily visit it on any of your travel days.

15. Discover the artistic side of Charleston at the Gibbes Museum of Art

In addition to its strong past as a major player in American history, Charleston is also a city of culture. At the heart of the city's artistic sphere is the Gibbes Museum of Art.

Here you can see all kinds of contemporary art exhibitions, some permanent and some temporary. In addition, the Gibbes Art Museum reflects the history of the city on an artistic level, so you can immerse yourself in Charleston's culture during your visit.

Enjoy a tour of historic downtown Charleston in a beautiful horse-drawn carriage in one of those unique experiences that few cities, including Charleston, are able to offer.

The horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of Charleston lasts one hour. The tour begins at the stables, where you will watch an educational video and meet the draught horses. Charleston is one of the most haunted cities in the United States. Since its founding with the arrival of the first settlers, tragedies and mysterious events of every nature have plagued the place. Many attribute the unfortunate events to the shamanic spells of the Native Americans who inhabited the land.

This is just a sample of the mysteries and legends that have shaped the city. The best way to get to know them all in detail is to take part in a Charleston ghost tour. Ghost tours are offered by numerous local companies that provide travellers with an expert guide in local history to take them through the haunted places of the city and explain in detail the events that gave rise to the myth.

Ghost tours are offered in different formats, with different focuses and at different times to suit the experience for all travellers. You'll find everything from family tours, events for all ages, to adult-only tours focusing on stories with more mature language.

All of these stories have been immortalised in the famous book 'The Ghosts of Charleston'. This night-time walking tour of the city delves into the stories from the book. The tour starts at Buxton Boos, the bookshop where the book is sold exclusively. Afterwards, you'll walk through the Unitarian Church graveyard, which dates back to 1772. This place is the main protagonist of Charleston's ghostly history, and other visitors have had supernatural experiences on this tour before.

The Old City Market is an old building built in 1841 and has been Charleston's main market ever since. Today it has become a must-see for the first-time visitor to Old City.

The site is on the American Register of Historic Places both for its imposing architecture, featuring red sandstone and iron mouldings, and for the role it plays in the dissemination and preservation of local culture.

I recommend to all of my travelling friends to spend a few hours in the Old City Market, admire its vibrant colours and enjoy the lively atmosphere of this space.

You will find dozens of stalls, including those dedicated to the sale of local crafts and traditional snacks. Pay special attention to the famous artisans of Gullah, an ancient craft brought from Africa by slaves imprisoned at the time and involving the creation of baskets woven from reeds in intricate patterns. The tradition has been kept alive to this day after being passed down from one generation to the next.
