How to Get to Sapa from Hanoi

Vietnam has a long railway tradition and is one of the Southeast Asian countries with the most kilometres of operational railways, so a very common alternative to travel to Sa Pa from Hanoi is to use the train service. However, bear in mind that the train doesn't go as far as Sa Pa but to Lao Cai railway station, and from there you'll need to take a taxi to the city centre or to the base of Mount Fansipan, which are located on the other side of the Red River. This transfer and the train's slow travel time make it one of the slowest ways to get from the Vietnamese capital to Sa Pa.

To get to Sa Pa from Hanoi you'll have to travel along the CT05 road and along the way you'll pass through Lang Khay and Thai Van, two important towns on the banks of the Red River, which follows the meandering route. If you're travelling by car, you'll be able to add stops along the way to discover not only Sa Pa and its mountain range, but also the surrounding villages.

While renting a car in Hanoi is not cheap at around 65 euros per day, the route from the Vietnamese capital to Sa Pa has no tolls, so you can save money in that regard. Sa Pa is a picturesque corner in the mountains in the north of Vietnam, close to the Chinese border. Also, during the winter season, sunset tends to come earlier, so you'll have fewer daylight hours for daytime treks.

The answer will depend on how much time you plan to spend on a visit to Sa Pa and also on the budget you have available for these experiences. If you want to choose a comfortable and relaxed alternative, where you can delegate the logistical planning, a 2-day organised tour will be the best option.
