 National Hockey League

The National Hockey League (NHL) delivers the fastest, most spectacular ice hockey on the planet. Its 32 franchises in the United States and Canada skate through an 82-game regular season from October to April before the Stanley Cup Playoffs ignite the action until mid-June. Each night is a full-scale show of music, LED lights and sub-zero thrills—perfect for an urban getaway: sip craft beer in Seattle while cheering on the Kraken, grab a slice at Madison Square Garden, or stroll the Saint Lawrence Riverfront before a classic Canadiens showdown in Montréal.

NHL History

The league was founded in 1917 in Montréal with four clubs. The storied “Original Six” era—Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Bruins, Rangers, Red Wings and Blackhawks—lasted until the landmark 1967 expansion that doubled the league and brought hockey to North American television. The 1990s wave pushed the ice south to warm-weather markets like Dallas and Tampa Bay, while the modern era welcomed the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017 and the Seattle Kraken in 2021. In 2024 the Florida Panthers lifted their first Stanley Cup and repeated in 2025, becoming the decade’s first back-to-back champions.

Notable Players

Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Gordie Howe set the standard; Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin carried the torch; today, Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, Cale Makar and Matthew Tkachuk headline a new generation dazzling fans across the league.

NHL Schedule

The 2025-26 season drops the puck on 7 October. As always, every team plays 82 contests (41 home, 41 on the road). Highlights include the Winter Classic on 2 January 2026 at LoanDepot Park in Miami, where the Florida Panthers host the New York Rangers, and the Stadium Series on 1 February at Raymond James Stadium with the Tampa Bay Lightning taking on the Boston Bruins. The regular season wraps in mid-April; the top 16 clubs advance to the Playoffs, four best-of-seven rounds that crown the Stanley Cup champion by early to mid-June. Tickets go on sale months in advance, so secure your seats and accommodation early, especially for outdoor games and high-profile divisional matchups.
