The Statue of Liberty is an icon of the United States and one of New York's most popular tourist attractions. Starting at £20, you can find individual tickets to visit it (in this case, you will have to pay for the ferry yourself). Here are some options for tours and cruises around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island that do not include admission to the statue itself but are still very interesting:

Regarding admission to the Statue, depending on factors such as the areas of the Statue of Liberty you wish to visit (you can choose between admission to the Statue Pedestal or admission to the Crown and Statue Pedestal) or whether you would like to go there on your own or with a guided tour, the price may vary:

Tickets that include a visit to the Statue's pedestal and the Statue's Crown have different prices (from around £20 for the pedestal and from around £23 for the Crown). However, it is well worth the expense because you will have the opportunity to see the monument from the inside, something unique that not many people are lucky enough to experience, as few tickets are available and demand is very high. If you get them, it will be one of the coolest memories of your trip!

For example, at Hellotickets you can join one of the guided tours to the Statue of Liberty from £60, which includes a guide, the ferry to Liberty Island, the trip to Ellis Island and tickets to the Immigration Museum and the Liberty Museum.

Taking a guided tour of the Statue of Liberty is something I recommend if this monument is one of the highlights of your trip to New York, as you will get more out of the experience. With the help of a tour guide, you will learn all about the history and the best anecdotes, and you will enjoy both the fun and educational sides of this excursion in equal measure. Going with an audio guide that just recites facts can be boring, but the guides know how to make the experience intimate, enjoyable and unforgettable.

What's more, by taking a guided tour of the Statue of Liberty, you won't have to worry about organising the visit, transport or queuing at the ticket office. As everything is planned in advance, you can relax and spend your time doing other more enjoyable things.

If you're not a fan of guided tours and prefer to do your own thing when sightseeing, you'll still need to buy tickets to visit the Statue of Liberty, either at the ticket offices in Battery Park or Liberty State Park or online from £34.

Breakdown of general admission ticket prices at the ticket office

  • Adults from £34.
  • Seniors (over 62) from £16.
  • Children (aged 4-12) from £23.
  • Children under 4 years old: Free

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most visited monuments in New York and tickets are limited (especially for the Pedestal and the Crown), so they sell out quickly.

My advice is to buy them well in advance and do so online, as the ticket offices tend to get very crowded with people queuing.

If you're not prepared to get up early and go to the ticket office first thing in the morning to try to get tickets for the same day, it's not worth standing there for so long as you'll most likely leave empty-handed. It's more practical to do it from your computer in the comfort of your own home.

Only children under the age of 4 can visit the Statue of Liberty for free. All other visitors must purchase tickets for the Statue of Liberty, although there are reduced rates for certain age groups, such as adults over 62 (from £16) and children aged 4 to 12 (from £23) for General Admission tickets.

With the reduced rates available for visiting the Statue of Liberty, you'll save a little on your budget and can spend that money on other activities or visits in New York with your family during your stay. Something that always comes in handy!

Can I enter the Statue of Liberty with the New York Pass or other city tourist cards?

You can see the Statue of Liberty from afar for free from the Staten Island Ferry, but if you want to disembark on Liberty Island to see it up close, you will need to purchase a ticket or have one of the New York tourist cards that include this attraction.

Most tourist passes include General Admission to the Statue of Liberty, which is the basic ticket that only gives you access to the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and the Immigration Museum. Unfortunately, New York tourist cards do not allow you to enter the Crown or the Pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

If you want to see the monument from the inside, you will have to book the full ticket separately with Statue Cruises, as the tourist pass cannot be used to see the Statue of Liberty, and pay a supplement to access the Pedestal or the Crown at the ticket offices in Battery Park or Liberty State Park.

How do I use the tourist card to see the Statue of Liberty?

It's easy! You don't need to book a time to visit the Statue of Liberty using one of these city tourist passes, but you will need to go to the ticket office at Castle Clinton in Battery Park (there is a fast queue specifically for presenting the pass) and exchange it for a ticket to board the ferry and take the tour. This step is essential, as if you skip it and don't exchange your tourist card, you won't be allowed to board the ferry.

Perfect tour for the whole family. My husband, our children and I had a wonderful day. Besides learning a lot more about immigrant history, and appreciating the great statue of liberty in the process. Before we knew it the tour was over, it was a lot of fun.
