Taking a trip to Vigo with children is not a bad idea, in fact, in this lively city there are many plans to do with them, regardless of the time of year you go. From January to December, you'll be able to find things for them to do.

Visiting the zoo is one of the best things to see and do in Vigo, especially when you go with children. Giant slides, skate parks and quiet bike rides are unmissable plans for that family visit in Vigo, because they also adapt to the age of each child.

The O Grove Aquarium is one of the best options for plans to do with children in Pontevedra, near the city of Vigo, thanks to the large number of marine species you'll be able to see there. If time permits, you'll also be able to see a large number of birds of prey that are sheltered inside the aquarium.

This is one of the best places to visit with children thanks to the exhibits of the larger marine animals, which are the ones that usually impress children. It's a great place to visit on weekdays and weekends.

Among the species that you can see here are those that live in the Rías Baixas and also in the Atlantic. I recommend you leave enough time to visit the aquarium, in fact, this is one of the best things to do in Pontevedra once you've had a good tour of the old town.

Although unknown to many locals, Castrelos Park is one of the most beautiful attractions for children and adults within the city of Vigo itself. It's a large enough park with a lot of trees and plants inside. Thanks to this amount of vegetation, it's considered a botanical garden.

But it's not only trees that you'll see inside this natural park, there are also many parks with small attractions inside the park's areas, so children can have fun. Swings, slides and other mechanical attractions are available within the park for all ages.

In addition to these rides, you can also find other beautiful and interesting places within the extension of Castrelos Park, such as the Castrelos Bridge and the pond, as well as the paths on the sides of the Lagares River, which lead to Samil Beach, one of the closest beaches to the urban area of Vigo.

The Briz Farm, also called the Park of the Senses, is one of the most fun and original places to visit with children, thanks to the number of trees in its territory. It is a place to find and discover the scent of different plants such as jasmines and other flowers.

This place is ideal to be in contact with nature, not only talking about trees and flowers, but also about the fauna that inhabits the place, different animals of different popular and traditional species of Galicia. The lakes and the area with slides for children, is the part of the park that they will like the most, so it is a place without waste.

Within the estate you can find at least three buildings: the main house, the house of the cellars and the house of the landlords. Each of these structures is set amidst the splendour of the estate, which also has areas of fruit trees. It is an ideal plan after a monumental tour of the historic centre of Pontevedra.

The parks in the city of Vigo are very fashionable lately. There are a large number of parks for children, with slides and other similar attractions, located in the different squares and avenues of the city of Vigo. Some of them can reach up to 7 metres high.

In these urban parks you can find slides for all sizes and ages, for small children and also for teenagers or older children. One of the advantages of these urban parks is that there is no entrance fee and you can go as many times as you want and at the time you want.

It's a good plan to always include in your outings with children if you're going to visit Vigo in 4 days or more. The accessibility to the parks and the central location of each one of them is a great plus for having fun in them. There is no specific location for the parks because they are arranged in different parts of the city.

Another of the advantages of this zoo for the enjoyment of children is that it offers a large number of workshops for them, where they can learn more about the characteristics of the fauna, and do fun activities in the company of their parents, other children and those responsible for offering these workshops.

In itself, the Galician Museum of the Sea is a good place to visit with children because they love to see the many marine objects and artefacts from Vigo's port history, but beyond that, there is a special space that they like even more, and that's the aquarium.

In the Museum's aquarium, which is undoubtedly one of the best museums in Vigo, you can find many marine species that inhabit the area of the Rías Baixas and the Atlantic Ocean. One of the best experiences you'll find in this museum's aquarium is the species sample route.

When I talk about sample routes, I am referring to the way in which the different species are presented to visitors: first the species that live on the coast, then those whose habitat is located in the Rías Baixas and finally those that live on the island. All this is well explained during the tour of the museum.

Skateboarding is a sport for teenagers, most of the time. That's why if you're travelling with children and teenagers to Vigo, and they like to practice with their skateboard or even their bike, they can do it at the skate park in Navia.

The Barreiro neighbourhood is one of the places in Vigo where you can find good tracks for skateboarding, BMX or rollerblading, and the one in Navia is one of the best so far, with a total of 2,000 square metres. The best thing about this park is that it is divided into areas according to the difficulty of each of the tricks on display.

Another place where a skating rink has been set up for the more adventurous youngsters is in O Castro, a place you can visit with the kids and youngsters to spend a pleasant time sharing and practising some of the trendiest urban sports.

Hiking routes are a real adventure for children, which is why one of the best things you can do with them is to explore Mount Aloia in the town of Tui. Something that will catch your attention about Mount Aloia to take the kids is that it has small and short trails, suitable for walking with them without tiring them too much.

One of the things that you and your children will like the most about visiting this place is that it has five viewpoints, where you can see incredible views of the Miño river. Besides, if you go with children who are interested in history and archaeological remains, this is one of the places where you can find this kind of sites.

If you go with a tour guide to see the archaeological sites inside the park, you will be able to learn about history beyond what you can see with the naked eye. On the clearest days, you can have panoramic views of the entire park, which is why this visit is one of the best things to see and do in Vigo in summer.

There are several places in Vigo where you can take the kids horseback riding. Horseback rides generally take you to some of the best places in the city, and always in the company of an expert guide who will be orienting you regarding the horses' behaviour and how to ride, in case you don't know how to do it.

The most popular horse rides are the ones in Monte Galiñeiro and Mougás. The most fun thing about these rides is that you can discover the most beautiful natural spots just outside the city. It is one of the best activities to do with children during the weekend because it is an activity that they enjoy and at the same time it is relaxing.

Horse riding routes usually last between an hour and an hour and a half. It is also popular to do the Monte Aloia route, where you can ride through the whole park on horseback.

10. Getting lost in the enchanted forest of Aldán

The Aldán forest is a hidden gem in the Rías Baixas. It's located very close to Vigo, so I consider travelling to this destination one of the best excursions from Vigo. In this case, it is a park that is called the enchanted forest. The name alone makes children automatically want to visit it.

Inside the forest there are many things to see and photograph, including paths with leafy trees, lush vegetation and above all small buildings that look like something out of a fairy tale. This place leaves a lot to the imagination and is one of those places to get lost in for a whole morning and get to know it.

The magical feature of this place is undoubtedly the castle of O Frendoal, a half-built construction that was intended to serve as a castle for the Counts of Canalejas. Nowadays it is in a state of abandonment, covered by undergrowth and only its fortified façade remains, the perfect setting for imagining magical stories and legends.

Interesting details

  • Price: There is no charge to enter this place.
  • Opening hours: You can enter at any time you want.
  • Location: It is located in the area of Cangas, half an hour from Vigo, so you can get there by car or taxi.
