With warm but not stifling temperatures and a smaller influx of tourists, every corner of Minorca shows its versatility. It allows you to connect with the fun and culture that is present in each of its festivities, taste its native wines and local culinary delights and take part in summer activities.

Come on, live it, enjoy its traditions and make the most of the most original plans. I'll tell you what to do in September and how to have an unforgettable holiday.

1. Take the wine route during the grape harvest

Wine production is a historic tradition on the island that you can't miss. It had its heyday in the 19th century, but then disappeared. However, from the 1980s onwards, it began to recover and in 2002 it received the geographical designation "Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca", the brand name that has been used since then for the wines produced on the island.

There is no better time than the grape harvest to book a visit to a winery in Minorca, to walk the wine route and learn about the wine-making process. You can also attend tastings and sample the different varieties. There are many wineries to visit.

The island's most characteristic wines are the reds made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and the single-varietal whites made from Chardonnay and Malvasia. You can easily recognise them by their label with the geographical denomination and you won't regret trying them!

2. Make the most of the traditional festivities of Mahón

Mahon is the gateway to the island. So don't hesitate to book a guided tour of Mahón. You'll fall in love as you stroll through its streets that exude history and get to know one of the largest natural harbours in the world. But the most enchanting thing about this capital is, without a doubt, its unstoppable festive spirit, because it gives its all during the Fiestas de la Mare de Déu de Grácia!

These festivities take place every year at the beginning of September and last for a week. The city honours its patron saint and commemorates its most ancient cultural traditions such as the processions. The highlight of the celebration takes place at the Town Hall, when hundreds of people chant Volem vi (we want wine), a song associated with the rain of wine bottles from the balcony.

Both day and night the city dresses up and offers you a variety of cultural activities, parades, parades, gastronomic displays, shows for children, fireworks on the shore of the port and a wide variety of music at all hours. Find out all the official information and come and experience this festival!

As every year, in September you can enjoy the "Mostra Cuina Menorquina" (Menorcan Cuisine Festival ) in which more than 20 restaurants take part, distributed all over the island. You will find participating restaurants in Ciutadella, Mahón, Alaior, Ferreies, Fornells and Sant Lluís.

You can sample the culinary delights and learn about the island's traditional recipes, mainly made with local and seasonal products such as Mahón cheese. You'll find typical dishes such as sweet and sour sardine fillets with onions and sultanas and the classic Menorcan prawn suquet, and desserts such as almond cake with caramelised pineapple.

Find out all the official information and join this gastronomic event. And if you still want to delve deeper into the culinary culture, book a Mahón cheese workshop.

Both the best known beaches in the south and Cala Macarella and Macarelleta in Menorca, Cala Turqueta in Menorca, o Cala Trebaluger in Menorca, as well as the paradisiacal natural landscapes of the north coast of Menorca, are one of the most popular attractions of the island and, to enjoy them, there is no better time of the year.

Their turquoise waters become even more beautiful and fascinating when they are no longer crowded by visitors, and they retain a warm temperature, while the hot and humid atmosphere of summer is a thing of the past.

In September you can access them more easily, without having to deal with the heavy traffic of August that clogs the entrance to the beaches from early in the morning. You'll find space at any time to settle in for the day and you'll be able to snorkel or do any other water activity you like.

The sun melting into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful images you should take away with you from Minorca. As well as the beaches, at this time of the year, the landscapes also become clearer and you no longer have to dodge people to appreciate them.

As I have already told you, the crowds of tourists are not usually the same as in August, and this will give you more freedom to move to the exact spot where you want to see the most beautiful sunsets. You have a great variety of places: you choose whether you prefer the Pont d'En Gil cliff, the beach of Son Bou, the Monte Toro in Menorca: all about your visitthe Punta Nato lighthouse, Cova d'En Xoroi or Sa Posta de Sol.

I also recommend that you consider booking a stargazing tour so that you can get to know the island's sky from every perspective.

September is the last month of the season so that you can live the extraordinary experience of diving into the crystal clear waters of the island and discover the marvellous spectacle that exists in its depths. Snorkelling is the ideal water activity for your holiday, easier than scuba diving as it requires little equipment and, best of all, you can find better prices at the end of the season.

You can snorkel at both the northern and southern beaches of the reserve and both offer unique and very different experiences. You'll enjoy a lot of diversity diving two to three metres deep on the northern beaches, while on the southern beaches you'll appreciate the rocky and seaweedy areas. Discover the best snorkelling spots.

If you are a fishing enthusiast or simply want to live the experience, the best time to go fishing in Minorca is in September. You will be surprised by the great variety of species in its waters, where you can find red mullet, roosters, rays, octopus and squid, among many others. If your fishing day is a success, you can also prepare some delicious typical Menorcan dishes such as rooster baked in the oven, octopus with onions or llampuga with peppers.

There are different ways of fishing and you can choose how you prefer to do it, whether you prefer to fish from the shore , underwater (diving) or from a boat, but bear in mind that for this last option, you will need a licence issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

The island has impressive coves and beaches where you can fish, the most popular areas chosen by fishermen tend to be: Playa de Cavalleria, Cala Morell, Port d'Addaia or Cala Mesquida in the north of the island and the beaches of Son Saura, Cala Turqueta, Es Taler or Playa Son Bou in the south.

If you are in Minorca, you cannot miss this village. It is located at the foot of Monte Toro, the mountain with the highest height above sea level on the island, reaching 358 metres, and where the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Toro, patron saint of Menorca, is located.

One of its attractions is on its north coast, which has one of the wildest views of the Mediterranean Sea and can be appreciated from a unique height. It is Mercadal and has a very picturesque style. In fact, its celebrations are steeped in tradition.

Every second weekend in September you can take part in the festivities of San Nicolás. This celebration is mainly characterised by the union of all the flags of the island's patron saint's fiestas and the procession on horseback to the sanctuary of Monte Toro to make an offering of them.

9. Be sure to visit Cala de Porter, a blend of tradition and originality

Cala de Porte belongs to the municipality of Alaior and is particularly well known for its beach surrounded by cliffs with vegetation, where you will find one of the most outstanding caves on the island, the Cova d'en Xoroi. You can visit it all day long and it is one of the best places to enjoy the sunset, and at night it turns into a discotheque, with spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Every third weekend of September since 1974, the town of Cala en Porter celebrates its own festivities, with a show that you will love. You will appreciate its special air, thanks to the events that take place on the beach, such as the traditional jaleo and the presence of a large number of horses and horsemen.

10. Go for a walk along the Camí de Cavalls

September, when the sweltering summer heat subsides, is the ideal time of the year to take a long walk along the Camí de Cavalls, enjoying its historic paths and the perfect weather.

The Camí de Cavalls has its origins in the 17th century and is a path that completely surrounds the island with an extension of 185 km. It is divided into 20 official stages, but you choose how you prefer to walk it. You can do it as a trek, following each of the marked stages or simply continuing along the path.

The route is designed so that you can do it in one day, following the stages there and back, without rushing and enjoying the landscape made up of ravines, valleys, coves and cultivated land

You will have a wide range of hotels, flats and houses to choose from in the best areas and at a very good price so that you can enjoy your stay to the maximum, without spending a fortune.
