September can be defined par excellence as the month of the return to routine. But like everything in life, there are exceptions. One of them is Mallorca. During this month, the island's still summery weather makes it even more interesting to enjoy it without the summer crowds.

Discover its irresistible gastronomy, enjoy its beautiful beaches or go sailing. Get ready for all that the capital of the Balearic Islands has to offer to see and do, even after the summer.

1. Enjoy the concerts at Bellver Castle

Music is important to the Mallorcans and they let everyone who visits them know it. For this reason, a few years ago the Palma Town Hall decided to take advantage of the great work of architecture, Bellver Castle, and give it an even more cultural use.

The castle can be visited on one of the many tours of the city, but it also offers the possibility of going off the beaten track by attending different activities, mainly concerts, set in the century in which the castle was built, i.e. the 14th century.

Prices vary, but are usually between 20 and 25 euros, and can sometimes go up to 40 euros.

You can find all the activities available at the castle on its official website.

2. Relive history with the battle between Moors and Christians

History can be boring, so to make it more enjoyable for all visitors, every year the battle between the Moors and Christians that took place on the island is recreated in Mallorca.

To round off the Rei en Jaume festivities, the town relives this episode in history that marked the end of Muslim rule in the Balearic Islands. The locals celebrate a big day in Santa Ponça, Calviá.

Mallorcans and visitors have the opportunity to get to know what the island was like in those times, its customs, costumes and gastronomy. We can even dress up in the costumes of that time and take part in the battle. The battle begins with the disembarkation in Port de Soller, crosses the village and ends in the central square with the victory of the Christians.

Considered the highlight of September, Nit de l'Art marks the start of the art season in Mallorca.

Art galleries and museums open their doors and inaugurate their new exhibitions. You only need to go out on the streets to soak up the artistic atmosphere, and as you wander around the city you will find a wide variety of artistic events.

Although this event mainly takes place over two days in mid-September, many art galleries and museums hold their exclusive exhibitions for a few days or weeks longer.

4. Part of a Hollywood production

Cyclop is the exclusive festival of visual theatre. It consists mainly of three exclusive days that the town of Sineu dedicates to events related to contemporary theatre, circus, music and dance. There are usually different types of performances by various artists from the area as well as foreign guests.

After the great reception in previous seasons, they have now added Nit Canalla to their programme. A workshop aimed exclusively at young people between the ages of 15 and 25.

This workshop consists of the creation of a show with the help of several professionals who work in the world of cinema and is presented to the public the following day. Although some of the activities are free, others have an entrance fee of between 5 and 35 euros. If you are travelling to Mallorca with children of this age, take them to experience the event.

5. Take part in the grape treading

The town of Binissalem is responsible for marking the end of the grape harvest. With a celebration that lasts almost two weeks and a programme full of events in which the protagonist is none other than grapes and wine.

In this traditional festival the Mallorcans dress up in their traditional costumes and decorate the streets with motifs of the end of the harvest. You can find different activities such as the correfoc, different exhibitions and parades of floats decorated with grape motifs, open-air dinners and wine tastings. But there are also activities that are less common in festivals, such as the traditional treading of the grapes or the popular grape-throwing battle.

6. A wide range of beaches to choose from

The good thing about going on holiday to an island is that wherever you look there are beaches and coves everywhere. And the ones in Mallorca will surprise you.

We can find beaches and coves as quiet as those of Portals Vells, where you can also take a boat trip to sail for a while. Cala Santanyí ideal for snorkelling, Camp de Mar beach, where the Netflix series "White Lines" was filmed, or Cala Estellencs where you can go hiking or cycling, among many other activities to do in Mallorca.

You also have these other beaches among the many that await you in Palma:

  • Playa de Canyamel: this beach has high-end hotels and restaurants nearby
  • Playa de Port de Pollensa: it has a long promenade and offers various water sports, boat trips and restaurants
  • Playa de Alcudia: the most popular beach for the younger crowd, where they can enjoy a wide range of water sports, hotels and restaurants
  • Playa de Muro: this beach also offers a wide range of activities and has luxury hotels and beach clubs.

If you are interested in culture, there is a lot to do in Mallorca and one of the essential plans this September is to visit the Gallery Red.

This is one of the most famous art galleries on the island. Within its four walls you can find works that have had to go through a very selective process, as the owners want the exhibitions to be exclusive.

Unique pieces of contemporary art, furniture from the 50s and 80s of the 20th century or vintage bags and accessories are some of the objects on display in this exclusive art gallery.

8. Sport and the sea as the main protagonists

You can also enjoy the wide range of sporting events on offer during the month of September in Mallorca. One example is the "Get in shape" programme, with which you can practice water activities such as swimming or aquagym for adults, or swimming for the youngest members of the family to enjoy.

On the other hand, the Real Club Náutico de Palma provides us with great events. Although the great King's Cup regatta is normally held in August, the club promotes all kinds of activities and competitions where the water and the sea are the main protagonists.

During the month of October you can take part or simply enjoy watching some competitions such as the "Trofeo RCNP A2", the "Campeonato de España Clase Snipe" or the "Trofeo Memorial Pepe Estela". All of them sporting events where you can experience the world of regattas with top level sportsmen and women.

9. Make a wreath to the patron saint of Palma

For the more religious or not so religious, you can enjoy the festivities of Mare de Déu de la Salut.

Known as the most traditional and cultural festivity celebrated in Palma de Mallorca, these festivities are normally held in the first week of September, with its peak on the 7th of September. On this day, a multitudinous and impressive floral offering is made at the Basilica of Sant Miquel.

This celebration is also accompanied by other types of activities such as dancing and traditional music, parades, craft stalls and local products, and the parade through the streets of the nearby villages of the giants and big-headed figures so typical of the region.

10. Discover the surroundings of Mallorca on an excursion

Mallorca also has charming places for those who want to explore the island's natural surroundings. For this reason, there are many organised excursions that can be booked from Palma.

From villages that look like something out of an advertisement, such as Banyalbufar, a totally green place, although it is now beginning to suffer from real estate development. However, it allows us to get to know and lose ourselves in this marvellous natural setting. From a small sheltered cove of fine stones with a beautiful natural waterfall, to Punta de Sa Galera, a gravel cove where the sea waves do not reach.

Or visit Llucalcari, a beautiful village hidden among the Tramuntana vegetation, making it look like a hidden place. Through it we can access Es Canyaret, a cove of stones located in a ravine that has its own natural freshwater waterfall, but the great discovery of this cove are its mud pools created naturally by the various freshwater springs that run through the ravine. What better way to enjoy some natural mud baths.

The weather in Mallorca in September

Like any coastal city, the humidity in Mallorca, which is high in these summer months, makes it feel hotter. However, after a summer month of August on the island, September is giving way to cooler days with an average temperature of 23-24ºC. The maximum temperatures rarely exceed 30ºC.

So these are ideal dates for all kinds of outdoor activities. However, there is no guarantee of total success with good days without any rain. Although the days with rainfall are fewer than in October or November, especially the second half of September can bring rain to the archipelago. There will be days when you will have to change your beach plans for indoor ones.

In the evenings it will be necessary to wrap up a littlewarmer. Bear in mind that temperatures can drop to 15ºC, so if you are going to have a drink on a terrace or walk along the promenade of any Mallorcan town, it is advisable to be prepared.

What to pack

As a good beach destination, all swimwear will be necessary on your trip to Majorca in September, but you can't leave a long-sleeved jacket at home either. Here are the necessary items you should pack for a perfect trip:

  • Swimwear and towel for the beach
  • Shorts or cool clothes, the humidity in Mallorca is high so you will appreciate having light coloured clothes to spend the day on tours or excursions
  • Comfortable walking shoes, bear in mind that you will be hiking or walking in some small coves where the cobblestones are difficult if you wear flip-flops
  • Long-sleeved jacket, in the evenings it starts to get cooler
  • Raincoat, in September it starts to rain some days, about 5 on average, so it is a great idea to have a mackintosh handy so that nothing will stop you from enjoying the island.
