You've probably been planning this moment all year and it's finally here. Summer is here and with it comes the desire to travel, discover new places, relax, live different experiences... Your suitcase is ready and you are eager to start your trip, but do you know where you want to go?

August is one of the hottest months in Spain, so when it comes to choosing a plan for your summer holidays, the beach and nature are among the first things that come to mind. So, what better place to spend the summer than on an island?

Mallorca can offer you spectacular beaches, land and sea sports, cultural activities, but there are also many other activities you can do during your visit to this paradisiacal island. Would you like to know all the options you have in August?

1. Vibrate with the prestigious Sailing King's Cup of Mallorca

At the beginning of August, one of the most important sailing championships in the world, the Copa del Rey de Vela de Mallorca, is usually held in the Balearic capital. More than 100 national and international teams compete in this prestigious regatta in the bay of Mallorca in different categories and with boats of different sizes.

With the so-called "embat" in the background, the boats anchor in perfect conditions. This meteorological phenomenon is none other than the Mallorcan sea breeze, which is ideal for sailing on the island and which undoubtedly facilitates this annual competition, organised entirely by the Real Club Naútico de Palma.

Encouraged by this unique sailing circuit in the world, you can sign up for one of the many boat trips around the island. You can choose between different boats, from a catamaran excursion to one of the many coves, to a sailing boat adventure or a city tour that completes the route with a boat trip.

2. Tour the city in comfort on a tourist bus

In Majorca in August the heat is an important factor that will almost certainly accompany you throughout your trip. Walking through the streets on one of the tours around the city is always a great idea to get to know its monuments, but it can be a bit tiring considering the high humidity that prevails in the air.

That's why a great idea is to travel through the streets on the tourist bus. There are several routes throughout the city lasting an hour and a half, and the most interesting is the one that allows you to get on and off as many times as you like at its 18 stops.

You can take advantage of these double-decker open-top bus tours to visit the most emblematic places in Mallorca, such as:

  • Bellver Castle
  • Mallorca Cathedral
  • Plaza de España
  • Seafront Promenade
  • Bullring of Mallorca

3. Discover the incredible career of Rafa Nadal

One more tourist attraction in the city of Majorca is undoubtedly the Rafa Nadal Museum, a real mausoleum of sport, as you can not only enjoy checking the great achievements of the Mallorcan tennis player, but you can also practice other sports such as cycling or rowing.

If you are travelling to Majorca with children, they will love this plan. Escape for a few hours from the sweltering heat of August and have fun with them in the many interactive rooms. You can experience from the inside what it's like to drive a Formula 1 car or play tennis with the virtual reality glasses .

You'll also be amazed by the exhibition of tennis rackets, trophies, sports equipment and other objects, not only from the great Spanish tennis player, but also from other international sports legends such as Michael Jordan, Serena Williams and Pau Gasol. Don't miss it!

I do recommend that you book your tickets in advance to avoid the queues that usually form at the museum's ticket offices.

4. Take the opportunity to relax in the beautiful Drach Caves

Very close to Rafa Nadal's museum in Manacor, you will find a natural jewel of the Balearic archipelago. I am talking about the beautiful Caves of Drach, located in Porto Cristo, very close to Manacor, and which are a must on your trip to Mallorca.

With a height of 25 metres, its interior temperature is normally 21ºC, which will delight those who wish to take shelter from the heat for a while in the depths of the earth among stalactites and stalagmites. On a one-hour tour you can also take a boat trip to discover Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world.

This is one of the best excursions you can make to the outskirts of the city if you are in Mallorca for at least two or three days. In addition, there are organised half-day tours that include entrance to the caves and as a complement they also take you to visit the famous Majorica pearl factory in Manacor, where you can discover how they are made.

5. Take a break to experience a film-like sunset

One of the most relaxing moments of the day is when the sun begins to set over the horizon to make way for the night. Summer sunsets are magical and that is why I am going to recommend the best places in Mallorca where you can admire the sunset.

You cannot miss the Formentor lighthouse in Pollensa, which is built 188 metres above sea level. On your ascent to the lighthouse you will not only be able to enjoy the mountain scenery, but you will also have wonderful views of the Mediterranean once you reach its base.

From Puig de Sant Salvador, which is one of the island's peaks, you will have the opportunity to admire 360º views of the island. Climb to the top and take the opportunity to watch the sunset from every angle.

Es Trenc beach is also a must-see at sunset. With its light-coloured sand and crystal-clear waters, it is the perfect place to sit on the sand and watch the sky gradually turn orange.

6. Get away from the crowds and do some inland tourism on the island

One drawback of August in beach destinations like Mallorca is the crowds. August is the holiday month par excellence for the vast majority of people, which means that you will be faced with overcrowded beaches, queues at the most visited places and difficulties in seeing some monuments or sitting at a table in a bar to eat. Yes, that's the reality.

That's why I propose an irresistible plan. Mallorca has places where you can get lost and get away from it all. Here are some examples of villages in the heart of nature that you can visit or even where you can stay for a few days to find the peace you need:

  • Valdemossa: It is only about 30 minutes drive from Palma, you can visit the gardens of King Juan Carlos that form the Royal Charterhouse and you can also have a breathtaking view from one of the best viewpoints of the island that is located between this village and Deià.
  • Deià: In Deià you can take a rural tourism route to admire the territory and don't forget to go down to the Cala de Deià where you can take a break and eat in one of the restaurants located on the cliff.
  • Esporles: Very close to Palma but one of the quietest villages on the island. An ideal place for a bike tour.
  • Pollença: A unique village with its own dialect. Be careful: although it is an essential place to visit because of its peculiarities, in August it has one of the most popular fiestas in the whole of Mallorca, which can multiply the number of visitors.

7. Taste the exquisite Mallorcan gastronomy during its festivities

Many towns in Spain celebrate their patron saint festivals in summer, dedicating several days to highlighting their traditions, whether it be their dances and popular songs or their rich and varied gastronomy. Mallorca is not to be outdone, and throughout the month of August you can take part in its many patron saint festivals, where you can also sample typical dishes. Here is a list of some of the festivals in some of the towns:

  • San Llorenç Station Night Fair: During the fiestas of San Llorenç de Cardassar in mid-August there is live music, races, exhibitions and cultural events for everyone, but you cannot miss this gastronomic and handicraft market held at the municipality's train station.
  • Sant Bartoméu festivities in Soller: In August this pretty village in the Tramuntana mountain range celebrates one of the most popular festivities in Mallorca with the correfocs or firework displays. Come and experience the festivities and try the delicacies on the stalls, such as "sopes mallorquines" or the delicious sobrassada.
  • Sant Agustí de Felanitx Fair: At the end of August you can also experience this festival with the giants and big-heads in the streets and with its night fair centred on the gastronomy of the region.

If you prefer, you can find more information about the best routes of Mallorcan delicacies in our article about the best gastronomic tours in Mallorca.

8. Don't miss the wine route in Binissalem

Summer holidays are the ideal opportunity to try new local dishes and, of course, new drinks. So I am sure that your palate will not be left indifferent with a good wine tasting in the Mallorcan wine cellars.

It's as simple as booking a visit to one of the more than 70 wineries where you can not only learn about the wine-making process, but also taste a selection of the best wines along with typical Mallorcan food. Imagine the sensation, strolling through the vineyards with a glass in your hand while watching the sunset on the horizon.

Binissalem is considered the wine capital of Mallorca and within the region some other villages to visit on this wine route are:

  • Santa María del Camí
  • Consell
  • Sencelles
  • Santa Eugenia

9. Experience a quad adventure in the Mallorcan mountain range

If you are a nature lover you should not miss the opportunity to visit the Serra de la Tramuntana mountain range, which is 90 kilometres long and runs through several municipalities on the island. You can take advantage of your trip in August, which is much drier than the following months of the year, to practice extreme sports that cannot be practiced during the rains of autumn or winter.

You can take a walk to admire the incredible landscapes or, if you like more thrills, you can rent a quad and let the adrenaline take you through the winding mountain roads.

And for the more adventurous, you can sign up for a canyoning route. Put on your harness and plummet down the rocky, steep cliffs of the sierra and finish by plunging into one of the cold water pools.

Nightlife in Mallorca is another attraction of the island and even more so in the month of August. Taking advantage of the fact that it receives thousands of tourists of all ages and tastes, the city has a wide range of festivals of all kinds. Here are some of them:

  • Origen Fest: Electronic music with top-level techno and house artists who come together over several days in Son Fusteret.
  • Royal Film Concert Orchestra: Film music festival with traditional soundtracks, which usually takes place every year in the Palma Auditorium.
  • Festival Chopin de Valdemossa: Enjoy piano and classical music concerts with the beautiful Tramuntana mountains in the background.

The atmosphere in Mallorca in August

Like many tourist resorts, Mallorca fills up with visitors in summer, especially during the month of August. It is well known that the islands are one of the favourite places to spend the summer holidays. So I recommend that you plan your trip in advance and book your visits to the places you like the most to avoid last minute inconveniences.

If you are going to hire a car to visit the island, I recommend that you plan your route to avoid crowds and make the most of your visits. It would also be a good idea to check where you can park before you go somewhere, as this can also be a difficult task.

For the rest, don't forget to pack your sunglasses, sunscreen and above all, your desire to have fun!
