During your trip to Granada, one of the places you must visit is, without a doubt, the Alhambra. It is often called the palace of the Alhambra, but this place is a citadel within the city of Granada. It has a complex of different palaces, gardens, passageways and a fortress. It was home to the sultan and his family, but also to the court and many workers. In fact, the Alhambra is the only Muslim citadel that is still standing almost as perfectly as it was in its origins.
You can discover this eight-century-old complex that tells an incredible story and is a world-class example of Islamic art. The palace was originally built in 889 AD as a small fortress, but in the 13th century it was rebuilt and renovated by the founder of the Nasrid dynasty Mohamed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada. And Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada, converted the fortress into a royal palace.
When Islamic rule came to an end in 1492, King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile conquered Granada and turned the palace into their royal court. Under their rule, it was partially modified in the Renaissance style. A century later, certain parts of the complex were destroyed to build a Renaissance-style palace, the Palace of Charles V, which you can visit.
In addition to the main points of the Alhambra, such as the Fountain of the Lions, you will also have access with this reservation to the Museum of the Alhambra, where the numerous archaeological testimonies collected over the centuries are kept.
