Fuerteventura is, within the Canary archipelago, one of the favourite holiday destinations for travellers, not only because of the many diversions it offers to the adventurous but also because of its easy connection to other small islands and islets.

One of these is Lanzarote, located just 14 kilometres north of Fuerteventura.

Visiting Lanzarote is considered one of the best things to do in Fuerteventura during a holiday. If you want to know in detail what this experience entails, read on to the end.

Visiting the island of Lanzarote is one of the most demanded activities by travellers and, for this reason, you will find several local tour operators offering this type of experience, in small groups.

For travellers who will only be on the island for a few days, say 5 days in Fuerteventura or less, the best alternative is an organised excursion that allows you to save time and see the best of Lanzarote in just one day of exploration.

While the specific details of the experience may vary depending on the company you hire, most companies include the following facilities in the price: return ferry ticket from Fuerteventura; transport from the hotel to the port of embarkation; an accompanying official guide; entrance fees to some attractions; lunches and drinks.

If you organise the trip on your own you may need to book at least 2 days to get the full adventure, losing valuable time that you can spend on other experiences.

The duration of the excursions to Lanzarote from Fuerteventura usually varies depending on the company you book the experience with. Some companies offer tours lasting 4 to 5 hours, perfect for travellers with short stays of 3 days in Fuerteventura or less.

However, other more comprehensive tours can take up to 8 hours to complete. This option is my favourite, as it allows you to get the most out of the experience, spend more time in Lanzarote and enjoy more of its attractions.

Like the excursions to Isla de Lobos, the trip to Lanzarote is considered among the best boat trips in Fuerteventura, mainly due to the short distance between the two destinations.

On average, the ferry trip only takes around 30 minutes to complete.

It's worth visiting Lanzarote from Fuerteventura to admire a different landscape to the other islands of the Canary archipelago.

From rugged, rolling mountains to beautiful white sandy beaches and dense palm groves, Lanzarote has the capacity to enchant everyone.

Its architecture between volcanoes

One of the first things that will impress you about Lanzarote is the way the place has been sustainably developed in harmony with nature.

Lanzarote's architecture is mainly made up of tourist enclaves that blend in with their surroundings and are interspersed with picturesque villages.

On this island you will find everything from large coastal hotels and bungalows, to traditional rural houses or boutique hotels in the inland villages.

Its marvellous beaches...

You can't go to Lanzarote without spending some time on its beautiful beaches, with their crystalline turquoise waters ideal for travellers looking for good snorkelling spots in Fuerteventura on holiday. Many of the island's beaches are ideal for children, as they are protected from the waves and currents. If you go to Fuerteventura as a family, you can make the most of the day and enjoy this or other water sports with your family.

The wine-growing landscape of La Geria

The wine-growing landscape of La Geria is often considered one of **Lanzarote'**s hidden gems. On arrival you will find an area covered in fragments from the eruptions of the Timanfaya volcano.

Local farmers have taken advantage of the humidity retention capacity of this material to grow vines. The result? Breathtaking landscapes that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the world.

In addition, the wine of La Geria is internationally renowned and famous, so you should make the most of your visit to the wineries to enjoy it.

If you have already decided to visit Lanzarote on your next trip to Fuerteventura, take into account the following tips.

Look for a complete tour of Lanzarote.

A tour to Lanzarote is considered one of the best things to do in Fuerteventura. As a result, you will be able to choose from numerous companies that offer this type of experience.

I recommend looking for companies that offer longer and more comprehensive tours in order to get the most out of your day and get to know more of Lanzarote.

Book in advance

The excursions to Lanzarote are experiences with a limited number of participants. Booking in advance is very important if you are going to the Canary Islands for only a few days, for example 4 days or less in Fuerteventura and you want to ensure availability for the day of your convenience.

I also recommend booking in advance if your plans are to travel to the Canaries during the high season, which includes the months from December to April.

One of the best parts of visiting the Canaries is undoubtedly the ability to move between the different islands that make up the archipelago. Fuerteventura is a key strategic point that allows an easy and quick connection to other important enclaves, such as Lanzarote or the nature reserve of Isla de Lobos.

Due to its geographical location, in the eastern part of the Canary Islands, taking time out of your travel itinerary in Fuerteventura to visit Lanzarote is one of the smartest decisions you can make. This way you'll get to know two different and complementary sides of the unique Canary archipelago.

Once you've explored the northern part of Fuerteventura, I recommend you take one of the many buggy excursions on the island, you'll notice a stark contrast to the volcanic landscapes that characterise Lanzarote's surroundings.

The best part is that, despite its many virtues, the island of Lanzarote is a small destination whose highlights can be visited in a day if you plan your trip carefully.

What are the advantages of taking a guided tour vs. visiting Lanzarote on my own?

A guided tour to Lanzarote provides the traveller with numerous advantages, especially if it is your first time in this part of the Canary Islands. Below, I will explain the main ones in detail.

You can save time and effort in planning

From my point of view, the main advantage that organised tours offer over the option of visiting Lanzarote on your own is the possibility of saving time and effort in planning your holiday.

The tour operators do all the logistical work, so the traveller only has to worry about being at the meeting point on the agreed day and time. This makes it the best alternative if you are going to Lanzarote for the first time.

You are accompanied by a local guide

The organisers of excursions to Lanzarote offer the group of travellers an expert local guide who accompanies them during the most important parts of the experience.

This guide is a valuable acquisition, as you gain orientation and knowledge about the place directly from trained and knowledgeable staff.

You get more out of your travel itinerary

Organised excursions to Lanzarote not only save you planning time, but also exploration time during your holiday, as tour operators are able to structure a hassle-proof itinerary that takes the group of travellers through the highlights.

As a result, you'll be able to complete in a single day an excursion that could take at least two days on your own. The remaining time can be spent on other activities, such as surfing lessons in Lanzarote.

You can save money

Guided tours save money on your trip to Lanzarote. Most entrance fees to tourist attractions on the island cost between €5 and €15, but tour operators run special tourist passes that allow you to access most of them on a smaller budget.

When you book an organised excursion to Lanzarote, the tour operator will usually arrange lunch options and sometimes include them in the price you pay.

However, those who decide to visit Lanzarote on their own should take the time to research some good local food options.

Here are some of the best restaurants in Lanzarote.

  • El Caletón in El Golfo: Located near Timanfaya, this is one of the best alternatives in the area. The gastronomic offer is mainly Spanish Mediterranean cuisine, with fish, seafood and excellent vegetarian options.
  • Restaurante Grill Volcán La Corona: One of the best churrasquerías on the island, ideal if you feel like savouring traditional Spanish cuisine and enjoying a grilled sirloin steak.
  • El Navarro in Costa Teguise: Considered one of the best restaurants in Lanzarote, the gastronomic offer consists mainly of Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine.
  • Restaurant Jameos del Agua: A luxury restaurant that I recommend to all my travelling friends mainly because of the location. Built in the middle of an old volcanic tube, the view is simply spectacular. The gastronomic offer is Spanish and Mediterranean food.
