In June, the thermometer in Marrakesh begins to register higher temperatures, with an average daytime temperature of 25-35°C, dropping to between 15-20°C at night.

Even so, it's a very pleasant month to visit the various monuments and gardens, as it's not as hot as July and August, and there are many hours of sunshine. It's also not high season and you'll find cheaper prices.

1. Enjoy the Gnaoua Music Festival in Essaouira

If you go to Marrakech in June, you can't miss the Essaouira Gnaoua Music Festival. In fact, no matter when you go to Marrakech, it is always advisable to take a trip to Essaouira, as it is one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco. But if, in addition, your trip coincides with the last week of June, you have a double reason to go, so book your trip to Essaouira in advance.

The festival has been held since 1998 with the aim of promoting Gnaoua music and promoting certain values such as the union of cultures and peace. In fact, the festival is an exponent of musical crossbreeding and the use of various instruments typical of Gnaoua music, such as drums (ganga), cymbals (qraqeb), the three-stringed drum (guembri) and the lute, is commonplace.

The event has an important international presence and each year brings together musicians of different styles such as reggae, jazz, pop and rock, with an audience of around 400,000 people. Admission is free, and it's a must-attend event!

2. Stroll through the Majorelle Garden

One of the best things to do in June is to visit the Majorelle Garden. It is a very special time because at the end of spring the garden is in all its splendour and the pond makes the temperatures milder, making it a very pleasant place to stroll around. A real oasis in the heart of the city of Marrakech. The garden hides more than 300 plant species from all over the world. Palm trees, cactus, rose bushes, bougainvillea, bamboo, and ponds with lotus flowers and water lilies stand out.

The precursor of this garden was the French painter Jacque Majorelle, who in 1922 bought an estate with palm trees. He later created an art deco villa and a botanical garden containing a large number of species. As a nature lover, Majorelle brought back specimens from all his travels.

The painter had an accident and in the following years the garden was badly neglected, but later, in the 1980s, the businessman and fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent bought the estate and doubled the number of species. Today it is one of the most visited places in the city.

  • Located at... Rue Yves St Laurent, (40090), Marrakesh.
  • The Jardin Majorelle, priced from 12 euros, is open from 11am to 5pm.

If you fancy a trip to the desert, you have several options. You can book a trip to the Merzouga Desert, the Zagora Desert, or the Atlas Mountains and the Agafay Desert, or if you're short on time, you can opt to book an excursion to the Marrakech desert with dinner. All are perfect options for the month of June before the scorching heat of July and August arrives.

Specifically, the Agafay Desert is about 40 kilometres away, the Zagora Desert is just over 350 kilometres away and the Merzouga Desert is about 550 kilometres away, and all three are unforgettable visits.

4. Escape the hustle and bustle with a stroll through the Marrakech Palm Grove

Another great plan for June is to book a camel ride through the Palm Grove, an enclave of around 100,000 palm trees planted during the Almoravid dynasty and located to the northeast of the city. It is considered an upmarket area and is home to a number of luxury hotels and golf courses.

It is common to tour the Marrakesh Palm Grove on camelback, horseback or you can also enjoy a quad bike ride. A pleasant and ideal way to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city in the middle of June and make a plan with the whole family. You'll also be able to take the odd break while you enjoy a green tea.

No matter what time of year you visit Marrakech, the Jamaa el-Fna square is a place you should not miss. It is located in the Medina of Marrakech, the historical area of Marrakech, and the ideal way to get to know all the history of this enclave is to book a tour of the Medina of Marrakech

. Specifically, from June onwards, I recommend that you make your visit at night, as the walk is much more pleasant due to the temperature. What's more, the square is full of food stalls where you can dine while enjoying an improvised show.

More information

  • Located at... Avenue Jamaa El Fna (40000). Marrakech.
  • The square is surrounded by various restaurants and bars so you can also relax while you have a drink and watch the life of the place. I leave you with the posts Moroccan food and the best restaurants in Marrakech so that you can get to know all the details of the local gastronomy.

One of the most visited monuments in Marrakesh are the Saadid tombs. They are small in size, so capacity is limited. June is therefore an ideal month to visit them, as there are not as many tourists as in other months of the year and you will not have to queue as long.

The Sa'did dynasty reigned between 1524 and 1659, and the Sa'did tombs date back to that time, when they were discovered and opened to the public in the early 20th century. There is a main mausoleum housing Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur and his family.

Le Jardin Secret is located in the heart of Marrakech and is also an ideal plan for the month of June, as you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city as well as the heat while enjoying a pleasant and exotic stroll. Like the other green spaces in the city, the plants and flowers will be in full bloom at this time of year.

Le Jardin Secret opened its doors in 2016 although it dates back to the Saadian dynasty more than 400 years ago and is home to almost a hundred species. It is divided into two parts, an exotic garden on one side and an Islamic garden on the other.

As a prelude to summer, temperatures in Marrakesh in June start to rise, but this is nothing like the central months of the summer season when walking around in the middle of the day is almost impossible.

In June you can generally enjoy all there is to see and do in Marrakesh, as the average temperature is around 20-35°C and rainfall is rare.

The number of tourists in Marrakech in June is low. This is unlike August, which has a large number of visitors despite the heat, or the months of April, May and October, which coincide with the high season. This makes it an ideal month to visit, as you won't have to wait in long queues at the various attractions and you'll be able to sightsee at your leisure.

It is very important that before your visit you have all the information about safety in Marrakech and how to get around Marrakech.

The holiday calendar in Marrakesh in general and Morocco in particular is quite unique, as is the case in all destinations. Even so, Marrakesh does not have any specific festivities coinciding with the month of June. Marrakech Du Rire, however, is a popular festival and is even broadcast on television due to its popularity.

What to pack for a visit to Marrakech in June

If you're visiting Marrakesh in June, bear in mind that temperatures will be high, so it's best to pack light linen or cotton clothes, which are ideal for the higher temperatures. It is also advisable to bring a hat or cap to cover your head and a scarf or foulard to cover your shoulders in case you enter a mosque or similar.

You should also bear in mind that Morocco is a Muslim country and it's advisable not to wear low-cut, strapless or short clothes in the case of women in order to avoid uncomfortable stares. Even so, despite being an Islamic country, it is one of the most westernised countries in the world, so dress codes are not as strict as in other places.
