This castle began as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, whose tomb is still inside. However, during the Middle Ages it formed part of the Roman walls and has remained a castle ever since.

In addition to all the history that surrounds the building itself, there are also many rooms inside that contain a multitude of stories. Some of the most remarkable ones are the Sala Paolina, a luxurious room covered with intricate frescoes, or the Court of Executions, where many heretics, such as the famous Giordano Bruno, were ordered executed during the Roman Inquisition.
