If you're short of time and want to avoid headaches, you can join an organised tour. But if you prefer, you can also do it on your own. We compare prices for tickets, tours, excursions and transport methods below:

If you want to go to Pompeii on your own from Rome, you can go by train, by bus or in your own car (in case you have rented one during the trip). By train, if you choose the high-speed train (to take just over an hour to get there), the price is around €25 each way.

If you choose the bus, the price is much cheaper, costing just over €30 each way, and the car is definitely the most expensive way, costing around €60 per day (plus petrol and taxes, insurance, etc). However, to find out more and organise your transport, I recommend you check out this article on how to get to Pompeii from Rome.

To get to Pompeii from Naples you can take a Trenitalia local train which costs just over €3 and takes just 40 minutes. There are frequent trains throughout the day, so you don't have to worry too much about timetables and you can buy your ticket at the Piazza Garibaldi station in Naples.

The best stop to get off at is Porta Marina, as it's the closest to the entrance to the Pompeii archaeological site. Although this option is easy, quick and inexpensive, there is nothing like taking an organised tour to really soak up all the history the ruins of Pompeii have to tell.
