Step by Step

This excursion has as its destination two unmissable attractions near Naples: the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum and Vesuvius, the volcano that dominates the city and the gulf. The activity includes not only entrance tickets for both, but also transport in an air-conditioned bus. The total duration varies between 6 and 8 hours and, if you wish, you can request to be picked up from your accommodation.

The first stop is usually Herculaneum, one of the Roman cities buried by the eruption of 79 AD. The list below brings together the main attractions:

  • Casa dei Cervi - An elegant residence that once belonged to a freed slave. It owes its name to sculptures in the garden.
  • Grande taverna - An old inn that miraculously survived the eruption. You can still see the food containers.
  • Casa del mosaico di Nettuno e Amphitrite - Occupies an area of 1200 square metres and is notable for its floor mosaics with floral motifs and geometric figures. It was not discovered until 1900.
  • Baths - At Herculaneum there were two establishments, a larger one in the centre of the Roman city and a smaller one near the ancient beach.

After visiting Herculaneum, you will take the bus to the Vesuvius National Park. It is the most important green area of the city and can be visited at any time of the year. The natural park is dotted with trails, the most striking of which is the one that leads to the volcanic cone (Gran Cono). From here there is a 360° view of Naples and its metropolitan area, the gulf and the mountains in the distance.

This activity does not require excellent fitness. The bus will drop you off at an altitude of 1,000 metres, but the summit is at about 1,200 metres. I recommend you wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

It was a more than complete experience where I learned a lot on Mount Vesuvius and in the ruins of Herculaneum, and I also enjoyed the archaeological visit like a little boy. More than recommended for everyone, it is a wonderful excursion.

The tour was quite good, I learned a lot at each site we visited and found it all quite enjoyable. The only negative point to add was the transfer to and from Naples, as it made me a bit dizzy. Otherwise everything was more than perfect.
