Step by Step

This guided tour lasts approximately 2 hours in total and is suitable for anyone who wants to learn about the history and culture of Lyon. The meeting point is a central location in the city centre, where you will meet your local guide. The itinerary touches on the following points of interest:

  • Place Bellecour: nerve centre of the city and pedestrian square at the confluence of the Saône and Rhône rivers.
  • Place des Terreaux: urban space characterised by the beautiful fountain of Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and the elegant buildings that surround it. At the time of the French Revolution, it was here that those condemned to death were executed by guillotine.
  • Vieux Lyon: the historic centre of medieval times. Here, your local guide will tell you about the history of the traboules, footbridges created for the transport of goods, as well as the Saint Jean Cathedral. It is best known for the astronomical clock inside. It is the most important religious building in the city along with the Basilica Notre Dame de Fourvière.

Lyon is France's third largest city after Paris and Marseille and has a rich and varied history. It is often overlooked by mass tourism, but it is a destination whose roots go back to Roman times, with peaks of importance in the 19th century, when it was a major silk manufacturing centre.

The tour does not include lunch but the guide will be able to give you useful information on what and where to eat. The French town is known for specialities such as La cervelle de Canut (fresh herb cheese, often served with toasted bread), Foie de veau (veal pâté with buttered potatoes) or the delicious Tarte praline, a shortcrust pastry with pink pralines.
