The city of Terezín is linked to some of the darkest episodes of the Second World War as a concentration camp. It was not an extermination camp but a transit camp to other camps such as Auschwitz or Treblinka, but the conditions to which those who passed through there were subjected were horrible and around 35,000 of the more than 140,000 people who passed through this place died.

If you decide to visit Terezín, I recommend that you opt for an excursion from the Czech capital. Here are some of the options available for your visit.

  • Magdeburg Barracks: During your visit to Terezín you can also visit the barracks where the prisoners lived in overcrowded conditions. To give you a full sense of how they lived, they have been faithfully reconstructed to their original state.

If you are going on a trip to Terezin from Prague, I recommend that you take the following tips into account:

  • Wear comfortable shoes. Terezín is very large and you will have to walk from one part of the concentration camp to another.
  • If your excursion coincides with summer days, don't hesitate to take water and sun cream. There are very few shady places.
  • Photography is allowed in Terezín concentration camp, with a few exceptions, so you can take your camera with you.
  • There are no shops nearby, so don't hesitate to take an energy bar, dried fruit or a snack... whatever you want.
  • It is not advisable to go with the youngest members of the family. For children it can be very hard or they may not understand the visit.
  • You have to be mentally prepared for the visit. It is very hard and, at times, you will feel anxious, overwhelmed and even suffocated. Just imagining what the people who went through Terezín might have felt will make you shudder. Even so, in my opinion, everyone has to go to a concentration camp at some point in their lives.
