If guided tours are not your thing and you prefer to go on your own, the best way to get to Terezín is by bus. Luckily we have the possibility to take a regular bus, as it is only 60 kilometres from the town of Terezin to Prague.

Direct buses leave from the Nádraží Holešovice bus station in Prague every few minutes. The frequency varies, but you should not have to wait more than an hour and a half between buses. In the best cases they leave every half hour. The journey time is 50 minutes and, as it's a regular bus, you'll need to pay attention and get off at the Terezin stop. You will know which stop it is as half the bus will get off as usual. The price per person per journey is 5 euros and can be purchased at the ticket office at the station.

Return buses leave at 16:00, 16:35, 17:35 and the last one at 18:35. Keep this in mind when planning your visit. Also note that the bus stop in Terezin does not drop you off at the camp itself and from there you will have to walk or take a taxi. It's a short taxi ride, although there is a lot of demand and you'll be charged around 10 euros. It is a couple of kilometres walk from the station to the Terezin camp.

Useful information

  • Travel time: 50 minutes.
  • Timetable: Depending on the bus. Buses run every half hour or hour and a half from early morning.
  • Recommended if: You are looking for the best alternative to go on your own.

By train: another alternative to travel on your own

If for whatever reason the bus doesn't suit you we have the alternative of taking a train. I don't recommend it over the bus as it's a bit more expensive and the journey is a bit longer. But it is a perfectly valid option. There are two train stations in Prague from which you can get to Terezin. Podbaba, which is closer to the centre, and click here Holesovice in the eastern part of the city.

From either of them you can take a regional train to the village closest to Terezin, as there is no stop there. You will have to take a taxi on arrival if you choose to do so. There are trains every hour and the ones we are interested in are: 670, 672, 676, 680, 684, 688, 690, 692, 696, 674, 678, 682, 686, 694 and 698. These trains run direct or with few stops in between and the journey time ranges from 50 minutes to an hour and a half. Fares are around 10 euros and vary depending on the stops in between.

Useful information

  • Journeytime: Between 50 minutes and 1.5 hours.
  • Timetable: Depending on the train. There are trains every hour for both the outward and return journeys.
  • Recommended if: You want an alternative to the bus and don't mind paying a little more and taking a few minutes longer.

By car: what to do if I'm driving my car

If you have a car or want to rent one in Prague, getting to Terezin is easy, quick and convenient. From the centre of Prague it takes less than 50 minutes to drive the 62 kilometres from the capital to our destination.

The most direct route passes through several nearby villages and there are toll booths on the way out of the city. Take Highway 8 out of Prague and then take Exit 35 onto the E55 and then link up with the 608. It's a straightforward route and not too difficult if you follow the GPS. The only thing is that it is a very busy route and you may encounter some traffic.

The great advantage of going by car, apart from the independence it gives us, is that we have a car park very close to the entrance of the Terezin camp and we won't have to walk or take a taxi to get there.

Useful information

  • Travel time: 45-50 minutes.
  • Timetable: as you wish.
  • Recommended if: You have a car and want total independence.

Taxi and Uber: other means of transport that may also be useful for you

As a last resort we have the option of taking a taxi to Terezin. I say "last resort" because compared to the prices of other means of transport, taxis are extremely expensive. The journey from Prague can cost between 70 or even 100 euros depending on the traffic. Even if it is comfortable, fast and leaves us at the door, the extra cost is not worth it. It is only an option if we want to visit Terezin and the other options have fallen through for various reasons.

Another alternative is to use services such as Uber, which do operate in Prague and the surrounding area. The advantage over Taxi is that you know the price and the route in advance and the ease of hiring it through their app. However, although it is cheaper than a taxi, it is still expensive compared to other means of transport.

Useful information

  • Journeytime: 40-50 minutes.
  • Timetable: The timetable of your choice.
  • Recommended yes: As a last resort if you have no other choice.
