10 Best Breweries in Brussels

The capital of this small but beautiful neighbouring country of France is Brussels. This city is home to a number of world-class pubs, bars and cafés. Some of the best craft beer bars in Brussels mistakenly fall under the name of cafés, so don't get confused!

The best breweries in Brussels are not just a place to have a beer, but a place to have an experience, with some offering over 1000 varieties - imagine that! To name but a few breweries, La Brocante, Moeder Lambic and La Porte Noire stand out. Visiting several of them is definitely one of the best things to do in Brussels.

1. La Porte Noire

If you're looking to enjoy a drink in a historic setting, then I recommend La Porte Noire. Live mini-concerts and a wide selection of beers make this place one of the best craft beer bars in Brussels and a must-visit if you consider yourself a beer fanatic.

This brewery also has the option to change the scene by simply going to the "whisky room", a more private room. The whole place has a somewhat curious feel to it, as in the past this brewery was a kitchen for an Alexian convent.

La Porte Noire is filled with coloured lights in every corner making it possible to enjoy a half-modern, half-medieval atmosphere. For more information on the brewery, menus and other services I recommend you visit the brewery's website.

  • Location: Rue des Alexiens 67, Brussels, Belgium
  • Average cost of beer: 350 INR (4,18€)
  • Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 5pm to 1am

Another great place for the best beers in Brussels is La Brocante, located in the flea market called Jeu de Balle. There are a number of cafes, pubs and restaurants lining the market's cobbled streets; however, La Brocante stands out for its collection of craft beers.

The music here is softer, traditional jazz and blues tunes. You can also enjoy some dishes and tapas here such as soups, salads, traditional small plates, chips... However, if you want to find out more about the menus, the beers and the dishes served, I recommend you visit the brewery's website.

  • Location: Rue Blaes 170, 1000 Brussels, Belgium
  • Average cost of beer: 400 INR (4.78 €)
  • Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 11am to 8pm. Friday to Saturday 11am to 10pm.

Another brewery specialising in craft beers is Moeder Lambic. The pub has recently opened in Fontainas and has become a mecca for beer lovers from all over the world. With almost 50 beers on tap and over a hundred different types of bottles to choose from.

The architecture of the brewery is more modern, the whole area is full of glass and has a long corridor where several tables are distributed. Ideal for gatherings of friends and family.

The staff is attentive and generous enough to help you choose and, if you know what you want, you will be served in no time, as there are plenty of staff. For more information about the brewery, I recommend you visit the Moeder Lambic website.

  • Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 4pm to midnight. Fridays from 4pm to 1am. Saturdays from 2pm to 1am. Sundays from 2pm to 11pm.

4. A La Mort Subite

One of the most authentic and traditional breweries in Brussels is A La Mort Subite, known by the locals as the Belgian beer bar. It has an extensive collection of beer varieties. However, compared to other breweries, this one offers a wide variety of menus for both tasting and lunch.

It has a very gothic appearance, with a long, well-lit corridor that branches off into tables for seating. Personally, in addition to the gueuze and lambic beers, I recommend their cheese sandwich.

The place has an old family legacy, as its founder is Theophile Vossen, a person of great renown at the time. The brewery was first opened in 1920, a detail that does not go unnoticed thanks to the multitude of old paintings, historical photographs and the architecture of the premises in general. For more information I recommend the brewery's official website.

  • Location: Rue Montagne aux Herbes Potagères 7, 1000 Brussels, Belgium
  • Average cost of beer: 500 INR (5,98€)
  • Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 11:30am to midnight. Friday 11am to midnight. Saturday 11:30am to midnight. Closed on Sundays.

Located in the city centre, with the Grand Place within walking distance, this is undoubtedly one of the most famous pubs in Brussels. Its collection of beers is wide and extensive, and it has several tasting options, making it perfect for a quiet night out. The style of this brewery is quite cosy, with a homely feel and lots of wood to decorate and create the space.

The menu is quite detailed, which will help you choose the option that best suits your particular tastes. L'Ermitage stands out mainly for two aspects: Modernity and open-air terraces. The brewery has luminous plants on the roof, many with an aesthetic purpose and a fairly large surface area. It also offers open-air services under a kind of modern umbrella full of lights. On top of that, it is located in the heart of Brussels and in a very easily identifiable area.

The brewery used to be a former cigarette factory, so imagine the size of this one. L'Ermitage also offers tasting tours where some beers are paired with specific dishes, a fun way to see how each combination tastes.

These tasting tours are usually paired with a specific price and include a certain number of combinations. In addition, the brewery has its own brand of beer, definitely a place worth visiting. For more information here is the brewery's website.

As soon as you enter you will see puppets and toys everywhere, a very peculiar feeling. The place is also full of historical photographs showing the before and after of this iconic brewery.

While it is true that having a beer here is not the cheapest thing you can find in Brussels, it is more than just a place to drink, it is a place to enjoy a moment of visual and gastronomic pleasure. Another of Brussels' craft beer bars is the Brussels Beer Project. This modern brewery offers around 15 different beers in innovative and very characteristic glasses, almost like the name of the brewery.

Although it is true that the variety is small compared to others, this brewery offers very mature products (minimum 5 months), an example of dedication and professionalism. Their beers are of high quality.

They also offer food and beer pairing services and tasting tours. The music is quite pleasant, which makes it a perfect place to take your partner or spend a quiet evening. It's not cheap, but it's special. For more information, as always, visit the brewery's website.
